Healthy Breakfast Smoothie with High Protein & Good Fats for the Whole Family

I am so excited to share my go-to smoothie recipe that my whole family used to drink on weekday mornings before the pandemic. I use a smoothie blender with different tumblers so each family member could have their own smoothie for the car ride to work or school. Since the pandemic happened and we are all working and learning from home these days, we now alternate between this smoothie, high-protein pancakes and omelettes for weekday breakfasts.

This smoothie is a great way to start your busy day because it is loaded with micronutrients and keeps you full until lunchtime (or at least late morning if you have a fast metabolism like myself).

The best part about this smoothie is that you can switch up the ingredients as you prefer, but this would be the most nutrition-packed version. When I tell people about all that goes into this smoothie, I get a few unimpressed looks, but no one has ever complained after trying it. It tastes great, it’s healthy, and most importantly, it doesn’t taste like grass like many other “healthy” smoothies out there.

I use all organic ingredients to make this recipe, especially the strawberry and spinach which are on the top of the dirty dozen list for having lots of pesticides.

This recipe yields approximately 400 mL which is a generous serving for an adult. I usually split in half for my daughters who love drinking smoothies from their cup with a built-in straw.

Here are a few options for ingredient addition/substitution:

  • Raspberries

  • Blackberries

  • Frozen kale (instead of baby spinach)

  • Hemp Seeds

  • Peanut Butter or other Nut Butter

 Prep time: 5 mins | Blend Time: 30 - 45 seconds

Ingredients

Fruits & Vegetables:
⅓ cup frozen blueberries
½ cup frozen strawberries
½ cup baby spinach
1 medium banana

Nuts & Seeds:
1 tbsp ground flaxseed
½ tbsp ground chia seed
½ tbsp pumpkin seed powder
1 tbsp almond butter

Liquids:
½ cup milk or plant-based milk (soy, oat, almond, etc.)

Instructions

Add all of the ingredients into a blender jar/tumbler and mix on high speed for 30 to 45 seconds until well blended.

If you give this recipe a try, I’d love to know how it turns out.
